FIHRM-THE began as a result of the VIII annual meeting of FIHRM, the International federation of Human Rights Museums, which took place in the International museum for Democracyin the city of Rosario, Argentina, from 28 to 30 November 2017.
The idea grew out of research conducted by FIHRM with member universities, who identified the need to establish a regional forum specific to the museums of Latin america and related organizations, seeking to contribute to the strengthening of dialogue on democracy and human rights in the region.
The countries that make up Latin america are: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
In all of them, a number of organizations and museums perform outstanding in the field of human rights, keeping the memory of violations of these rights during the dictatorships suffered in recent decades.
It is an essential task, because those who know their history, and struggles in the pursuit of conquering rights are conscious of the value of these achievements, and may react against other injustices that still suffer from many members of their communities. In front of these complex problems and difficult to deal with, the museums of the region can and should activate its role as organizations in the service of the people.
FIHRM-THE facilitates the establishment of a forum for discussion, agreement and collaboration between museums in Latin america, so that together you develop your potential as educators, seeking to contribute to the public interest, understand, and respect for the rights which have been declared to be inalienable for all humans.
