Ever since Qatar was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup, the treatment of migrant workers has been at the center of the international debate. The Foundation’s investigation documents nearly 16,000 deaths between 2010 and 2022: on average, 23 lives a week. Behind every number are men and women who left their countries in search of a better life and never came back.

In Nepal, the team interviewed the families of workers who died and the migrants who managed to return. Their testimonies reveal abusive working conditions, debt, lack of protection and little redress for the victims.

Hosting a World Cup is a privilege. Whoever does it must guarantee real human rights standards. Qatar must be a turning point. Never again should football be tied to death.
