More than 50 million people live in slavery around the world. The abolitionist movement of the 19th century did not end slavery: it is still alive, and growing, in most countries.
Today slavery takes more complex forms — more elusive, and harder to spot at a glance — but it is just as cruel and degrading.
Although definitions vary, the term “modern slavery” refers to situations of exploitation of people by other people that someone cannot leave because of threats, violence, coercion, abuse of power or deception.
They work in mines, they dig, they fish, they build, they clean, they carry, they sew. Their bodies do not belong to them. Yesterday. Today. The same abuse.
The Foundation is a pioneer and a point of reference in bringing modern slavery to light, in Argentina and abroad: field investigations such as Behind the Passion (Nepal/Qatar), campaigns against human trafficking and educational programs in schools.
